2026 K League 2 Promotion Dates and Format Announced

The K League have announced the 2026 K League 2 promotion playoff dates as well as the format, with a slight update depending on which team finishes 12th in K League 1.

With K League 1 expanding to 14 teams next season, at least three teams will win promotion from K League 2 this year - two automatically and one via a four-team playoff system. This was already announced at the start of the season, as was an interesting follow-up playoff between the losers of the K League 2 Playoff Final and 12th in K League 1, should it be any other team than Gimcheon that props up the table come season's end. It has made for a very exciting race for promotion in the second tier. What's new is a possible second leg in the K League 2 Playoff Final.

Playoff Semi-finals

The K League 2 semi-playoffs will take place on Wednesday, December 2, at 7 PM. The teams finishing third and sixth will face off, as will the teams finishing fourth and fifth. Both matches will be played as single-leg ties at the home stadiums of the higher-ranked teams.

For example, as things stand heading into Round 31, it would be Seoul E-Land vs. Hwaseong FC at Mokdong and Daegu FC vs. Busan IPark at Daegu iM Bank Park. Of course, still lots to play for in terms of automatic promotion and places in the top six.

Playoff Finals & The Gimcheon Factor

The promotion playoff final between the two semi-playoff winners (third vs. sixth and fourth vs. fifth) will take place on Saturday, December 5, at 4:30 PM. However, the format of the K League 2 playoffs and the promotion opportunities available will depend on Gimcheon Sangmu's final position in K League 1.

As has been well documented since the start of the year, Gimcheon Sangmu will be relegated regardless of their final league position, as their affiliation agreement with Gimcheon City expires at the end of this year.

If Gimcheon Sangmu finish 12th in K League 1, they will be the only team relegated, with no separate promotion-relegation playoff required, and there'll be three teams promoted and no more. In this scenario, the K League 2 playoff final will be played over two legs, with the winners earning promotion to K League 1. The addition of a second leg is something that was not known or announced at the start of the season. K League will have broadcasting obligations to fulfill, and with fewer playoff games in general compared to normal, this potential additional second leg appears to be aimed at appeasing broadcasters who will have slots needing to be filled.

The Complicated Part

If Gimcheon Sangmu finish anywhere other than last, the team that is propping up the K League 1 table will face the losing team from K League 2 in a promotion-relegation playoff. In this scenario, the K League 2 playoff final will be a single-leg match. The winners will earn promotion, while the losing team will have a further opportunity to earn promotion through the promotion-relegation playoff against 12th in K League 1.

Further details will be announced once Gimcheon Sangmu's final league position has been determined.

Who's Secured Playoff Spots?

There are four games to go in K League 2, and four teams from six have mathematically secured a place in the playoffs at the very least. Suwon Samsung Bluewings, who could secure automatic promotion in their next two games having built up an eight-point lead, as well as Suwon FC, Seoul E-Land, and Daegu FC. Suwon FC and Seoul E-Land are locked on 54 points, with Daegu on 52 points, to battle it out for the runner-up spot and automatic promotion.

This leaves a surprisingly open race still with four rounds to go. Busan IPark and Hwaseong FC occupy the last two playoff spots, but all teams down to ninth place still have a mathematical chance of extending their seasons.
