Transfers: Ulsan HD sign Lee Jin-hyun from Polish side Puszcza Niepołomice

Ulsan HD have boosted their energy levels and attacking presence by signing midfielder Lee Jin-hyun from Polish top-tier side Puszcza Niepołomice. 

Known for his tireless work rate and ability to operate between the front line and central midfield, Lee also brings defensive contributions with his trademark aggression.

Having developed in the youth system of Pohang Steelers, Lee Jin-hyun stood out early, excelling as a key player during the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup. He played every match from the group stage to the knockout rounds, catching the attention of overseas clubs.

Lee’s professional debut came in Europe when he joined FK Austria Vienna on loan, gaining invaluable experience in 20 matches over nine months. Returning to Pohang during the summer transfer window of the 2018 season, he played almost every game in the latter half of the season, scoring five goals and providing one assist in 17 league appearances. He secured a starting position the following year with 20 league appearances.

Lee also gained recognition on the international stage, contributing to South Korea's gold medal at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games.

In 2020, he transferred to Daegu FC, appearing in 21 league matches. The following year, he joined Daejeon Hana in K League 2, where he played 80 league games over three years, scoring 10 goals and assisting 13 times. Lee played a pivotal role in Daejeon’s promotion to and stabilization in K League 1.

Building on his domestic success, Lee pursued a second overseas stint in 2024, joining Poland’s Puszcza Niepołomice. Over a year, he played 31 league matches as a starting midfielder, showcasing exceptional work rate, kicking ability, and tactical intelligence. He not only influenced the entire pitch but also handled set-piece duties, highlighting his versatility.

Recognised for his talent both domestically and internationally, Lee has now chosen Ulsan as his next destination. With Ulsan participating in prestigious competitions like the AFC Champions League Elite and the FIFA Club World Cup during the 2025 season, Lee aims to further demonstrate his abilities on a larger stage.

For Ulsan, which faces a demanding season with domestic league, cup matches, and numerous international tournaments, Lee’s extensive experience in youth, senior national teams, and European leagues is expected to bring significant on- and off-field synergy.

Returning to the K League, Lee Jin-hyun expressed his ambitions: “I understand the expectations fans have of me. During games, I will aim to bring joy with my shots and goals, and after games, I’ll amaze them with heat maps as vibrant as litmus paper. My first goal is to prepare well during the upcoming winter training camp to deliver on these promises.”

Lee’s arrival is set to add depth and dynamism to Ulsan HD, bolstering their quest for domestic and international success.

The Horangi also recently confirmed the signings of wingback Park Min-seo and goalkeeper Moon Jeong-in from Seoul E-Land and Heo Yool from Gwangju FC.
