Recap: A 3-1 Comback Win for Pohang over struggling Daegu FC

Pohang Steelers completed a 3-1 comeback win at home through three second-half goals after they went 1-0 down before the half time in Round 2 of the 2024 Hana 1Q K League 1 season. It was the first win for newly appointed manager Park Tae-ha and his team. Daegu FC correspondent Muyeol Jung reviewed the game and listened to both managers in the press conference.

What happened

It was a scrappy first 45 minutes where Daegu FC opened the scoring right before half-time through captain Hong Chul's effort. The hosts possessed the most of the ball, trying to break out the defence, but had to see their efforts in vain.

The second half saw a different phase of the game. The hosts came out for the second half with the introduction of Yoon Minho and Kim Jongwoo. The changes made immediate impacts on their game. Brazilian forward Jorge provided an assist with a header for Jeon Min-gwang on 48th minute. Not long after that, Pohang took the lead through Kim In-sung, who pounced it after a curling effort from Jorge was palmed away by Daegu goalkeeper Oh Seunghoon. The third goal on 72nd minutes was the pinnacle of the home opener for Pohang. Substitute Kim Jongwoo played a one-two with the brazilian and sent a low curling ball into the back of the net. Afterwards, the visitors pushed hard to get back into the game, but had to fall to a 3-1 defeat at the Steelyards.

Post-match conference

Daegu FC manager Choi Wonkwon

What's your assessment on today's game?

"I think we played okay in the first half, but Pohang were able to maintain their styles at a high level of concentration in the second half where they took the chances. That means we couldn't maintain our cohesion when defending. I'd like to express my congratulations on Pohang's first win".

It was a change between Barcelos and Edgar, but there's an opinion that it should have been Cesinha taken off instead of Barcelos.

"I am aware of that voice from the fans. But football is the result business. I understand why the fans think like that. Barcelos isn't in a bad form, but he didn't prove with the result on the pitch, while Cesinha always pulls off the result on the pitch even if he is in a bad form. So does Edgar. I think those opinions are heard because we didn't get the result and I think we have been giving Barcelos enough time to play. He really needs to make difference on the pitch. Cesinha has no issue with strength to play, although his sharpness level is not as high as it should have been. I don't regret it [the subsitute]".

If we looked back at the goal coceding moments, you must have been disppointed with a defensive reaction.

"We thought a defensive cohesion would be a problem, going into the season as we have a new player coming in. It is important to overcome these kinds of dangerous moments without conceding a goal and playing football, but in that regards, Pohang showed a good level of concentration. Two straight defeats isn't good, but I believe this is a part of the process that we build our team upon. I don't want to make an excuse for lack of budget, or squad depth, but all I want to do is to make sure we prepare well for our next home game".

Pohang Steelers manager Park Taeha

What's your thought on the result?

"When we were in desperate need of a win, I am happy that we got the result. We didn't perform well in the first half, but we bounced back in the second half. I'd like to send my gratitude to my boys for getting the result".

What have you done to improve things for Pohang in the second half?

"We were thinking how to play two midfielders (vertically or horizontally). We looked to bring Daegu out of shape, but things didn't go to plan and we made some tweaks at half time in that regards with changes that led to a 3-1 comeback".

In today's win, Yoon Minho and Kim Dongjin played their parts. What does this win mean for Pohang?

"Regardless of the reason for our exit to ACL, we were in a desperate of a win and I am sure this win would be a springboard for us to take a step forward. The likes of Yoon and Kim would be a good assest for us as I watched them in training session day in and day out".

You must have been under a lot of pressure to get the first win. How would you find this journey so far?

"Well, I spoke to the press before, and I have been through seven straight defeats that lasted over a month when I was in China. Of course, it is nerve-racking. But I'd always like to think in a more relaxing way. Anything could happen in football and a crisis would always strike you even when you are doing well. So you need to learn how to control yourself well and you need to do your best in every game".
