Bucheon FC 1995 Record Holders - Appearances and Goals

Since joining the K League in 2013 several Bucheon players have earned themselves a place in the club's history due to their goalscoring exploits or their many years of service. Our Bucheon columnist George Slade takes a look at some of the players that have etched their name into the K League era of the club's history.

Top Five Most Appearances

1. Kim Ryun-do, Centre-forward - 141 matches, 14 goals, 12 assists

DOB: 9th July 1991
Time At Club: January 2014 - January 2020
Nationality: South Korean
Current Football Club: Ansan Greeners (2020-present) - K League 2

Kim signed his first professional contract with Bucheon after spending four years as a student at Kwangwoon University. While he was never a prolific scorer, he was always deemed useful as a supporter player up front. Also, he was considered something of a good luck charm, due to the fact that whenever he scored his team would always be undefeated. This streak has since been broken while playing at Ansan Greeners. Kim was forced to be used as a squad rotation player while on his national service loan at Ansan/Asan Mugunghwa from mid-2017 to early-2019, but that time away did not effect him upon his return to Bucheon. In fact, his 2019 goal and assist tallies of six each is the highest of his career, and contributed to Bucheon reaching the promotion playoffs. It also has lead to him being currently Bucheon's seventh highest goalscorer of all time, with their third most assists of all time. Last season Kim was Ansan's top scorer with goals, helping them to a seventh place finish, two points above eighth placed Bucheon.

2. Mun Ki-han, Attacking Midfielder - 130 matches, 10 goals, 26 assists

DOB: 17th March 1989
Time At Club: January 2016 - January 2020
Nationality: South Korean
Current Football club: Gangneung City (2020-present) - K3 League

When Mun joined Bucheon he had already amassed eight years worth of experience at K League clubs. Contracted to FC Seoul for the entirety of hose eight years, Mun only played 25 matches for the top tier club. To gain more match experience he elected to sign for Police club Ansan Mugunghwa in the 2013 and 2014 seasons, where he was a first team starter week in week out. Upon returning to Seoul he was loaned to Daegu FC in 2015, where he registered an impressive 11 assists in 40 matches. He was hen subsequently released by Seoul and joined Bucheon. His assist making continued, to the extent that he holds the Bucheon club record, with his 26 assists being twice as much as second place holder Jin Chang-su. His 10 goals also make him Bucheon's joint-ninth highest goalscorer of all time. Now at third tier club Gangneung City, Mun played 22 matches and scored twice in his debut season, leading them to third place in the league and to the semi-finals of the Championship Play-off.

3. Gong Min-hyun, Centre-forward - 126 matches, 24 goals, 5 assists

DOB: 19th January 1990
Time At Club: January 2013 - January 2019
Nationality: South Korean
Current Football Club: Jeju United (2020-present) - K League 1

Bucheon was the first professional club to sign Gong Min-hyun, acquiring him after he graduated from Cheongju University. Gong hit the ground running, scoring 15 goals in 98 appearances in his first three seasons at the club. He then spent 2016-17 at Ansan/Asan Mugunghwa for his national service, becoming a regular starter and scoring roughly a goal every five games. Gong returned to Bucheon at the end of 2017 and stayed with them for the 2018 season, where he again proved effective in front of goal. This earned him a move to newly promoted K League 1 outift Seongnam in 2019, but he only scored twice in 33 top tier matches. Gong dropped down to fierce Bucheon rivals Jeju United in 2020, where he had the most prolific season of his career, scoring 10 goals in all competitions as his side on the K League 2 title. He even scored once against Bucheon in a 4-0 victory in August. Gong will now have a chance to have another crack at the top flight as he has remained with promoted Jeju United for the upcoming 2021 season.

4. Lim Dong-hyuk, Centre-back - 113 matches, 6 goals, 2 assists

DOB: 8th June 1993
Time At Club: January 2016 - January 2020
Nationality: South Korean
Current Football Club: Jeju United (2020-present) - K League 1

Prior to joining Jeju United at the same time as former teammate Gong Min-hyun, Lim Dong-hyuk had spent his whole career at Bucheon, joining them in 2016 from Soongsil University. While Gong provided the goals up front, Lim was used in rotation at the back, playing 19 matches in all competitions, scoring three times and assisting once to play his part in Jeju's first silverware since the club moved to the island. At Bucheon he was one of the club's star players, playing in almost every single match from the 2017 season onwards, after being used sporadically in 2016. He played an integral part in Bucheon reaching the promotion playoffs in 2019, and it was those performances that got him noticed by Jeju. As he is untested at any other level, it will be interesting to see if he can make the step up to K league 1 in 2021.

5. Kim Young-nam, Central Midfielder - 112 matches, 7 goals, 6 assists

DOB: 24th March 1991
Time At Club: January 2015 - January 2021
Nationality: South Korean
Current Football Club: None (2021-present)

Kim Young-nam was Bucheon's captain last season and any club lucky enough to acquire his services will be receuiting a consistent performer with excellent leadership abilities. Kim has been playing football in the capital area for almost two secades, having been a member of the Seongnam youth setup since he was at school. After a brief period at Chung-ang University Kim rejoined Seongnam as a professional in 2012, but would only end up playing eight first team matches in three seasons. Upon signing for Bucheon he immediately hit the ground running, with his first season remaining his most prolific going forward in his career as he scored four goals and assisted three times.

He continued to be an important first team player in 2016 and the first half of 2017, however his game time was significantly reduced when he joined Asan Mugunghwa for national service halfway through 2017. Kim only played 14 matches in his season and a half at the police side, and his return to Bucheon in 2019 was derailed when injury reduced his playing time to only six appearances. In 2020 he was back to full fitness and as captain he lead by example, trying to get the most of a team that lacked much creativity and inspiration going forward. He also became Bucheon's joint eighth most productive assist maker, level with Ahn Tae-hyun and ex-Jeonnam player Lim Chang-kyoun. Of all the players to depart the club in this transfer window, Kim will be the most sadly missed.

Top Five Most Goals

1. Rodrigo Paraná, Centre-forward - 85 matches, 26 goals, 5 assists

DOB: 25th January 1987
Time At Club: January 2014 - January 2016, July 2017 - January 2018
Nationality: Brazilian
Current Football Club: None (2020-present)

A lot of South American footballers that end up in the K League generally have had nomadic careers, and Bucheon's record goalscorer Rodrigo Paraná is no exception. Over the last decade he has played for eight clubs in four countries, but no spell was as successful as his time at Bucheon. Paraná first joined the club after years spent in the lower divisions of Brazilian football with teams such as Rio Claro and São Bento, with Bucheon becoming his first club abroad. He was an immediate success, scoring 11 goals in the league in each of his first two seasons at the club, as well as two goals in the FA Cup in 2014 and four assists in the league in 2015. This earmed him a move in 2016 to Japan, where he joined J2 League club V-Varen Nagasaki. However, after a goalless six matches he was loaned to divisional rivals Giravanz Kitakyushu in the summer, where he improved to score four goals in 17 matches. This did not convinve his parent club of his abilities, and he was released at the end of the season.

Paraná returned to Rio Claro in his homeland in March 2017, but just four months later he returned to Bucheon for his second spell at the club. This time would not prove to be as successful, as he scored just twice with one assist in 14 matches. Paraná would be released at the end of the season, moving to Thai League 1 club Ubon UMT United in January 2018. This would also prove to be an underwhelming spell, and he was on the move again six months later, returning to Korea to play for Siheung Citizen, where he won the K3 League Basic title. After departing at the end of 2018, Paraná would go on to have short spells in Brazil for Internacional Limeira and Rio Claro once again, and he was been without a club since May 2020.

2. Jin Chang-su, Left-winger - 109 matches, 24 goals, 13 assists

DOB: 26th October 1985
Time At Club: January 2016 - January 2019
Nationality: South Korean
Current Football Club: None (2020-present)

The joint most prolific Korean in Bucheon's history, Jin Chang-su holds the Bucheon records for the most goals and assists combined, with 37, and has created the second most assists in Bucheon's history. Jin grew up in Japan and first played for the clubs Tokushima Vortis, Sagawa Express, and FC Korea. In October 2008 he took part in the Korea National Sports Festival as part of the team representing ethnic Koreans from Japan and his performances got him noticed by Korean clubs. He moved to Korea for the first time in 2009 to sign for K3 League club Pocheon Citizen, and one year later Jin made the move to the National League to join Gangneung City.  Two years were spent on the coast of Gangwondo until he got his first taste of second tier football, joining the now-defunct Goyang Hi FC in 2013. A year later Jin returned to the National League to play for Gyeongju KHNP, but after only a season he returned to Goyang in 2015.

His two spells at Goyang resulted in 13 goals and eight assists in 77 appearances, but this was to pale in comparison compared to his time at Bucheon, his longest spell at any club. Upon joining Bucheon at the age of 30 Jin immediately cemented himself as a crucial player, combining with Brazilian forwards Lukian and Waguininho in 2016 to help Bucheon achieve its highest ever position of third place. The club also had its best ever season in the FA cup, as they reached the semi-finals. The two subsequent seasons saw Bucheon slip further down the table, but that was not because of Jin's lack of attacking threat. However, Jin was still released after Bucheon needed to rebuild after a poor 2018 season, and he went without a club until he joined Ansan Greeners in July 2019. After only one goal in eight matches Jin was released at the end of the season and he has not played professional football since.

3. Gong Min-hyun, Centre-forward - 126 matches, 24 goals, 5 assists

See Number Three in 'Top Five Most Appearances.'

4. Waguininho, Right-winger - 69 matches, 23 goals, 4 assists

DOB: 30th January 1990
Time At Club: January 2016 - January 2018
Nationality: Brazilian
Current Football Club: None (January 2021)

Waguininho first came to Bucheon on a season long loan from Brazilian Serie B team Oeste Futebol Clube in 2016, but this was made into a permanent transfer in 2017 after he scored 11 goals in 38 matches in all competitions, and the decision paid off immediately. His 12 goals in 28 league matches in 2017 gave him an end of season goals per match ratio of 0.43 goals per game, a Bucheon record for a player in a single season. These prolific two seasons, his first ever abroad, caught the eye of Suwon Samsung Bluewings in K League 1 in 2018, where he would play for two seasons. Waguininho would never achieve the form that he once had at Bucheon, resulting in him only scoring 11 goals in 45 matches in all competitions, with 10 of those goals coming in his first season. 2019 may have been a new low for him in terms of personal achievements, however he did at least earn a Korean FA Cup winner's medal. He would be released at the end of 2019 and return to his homeland to join Serie B team Guarani Futebol Clube, scoring three goals in 22 matches. It is unclear what his next move will be and he is in negotiations with several clubs in Brazil.

5. Lukian, Centre-forward - 64 matches, 19 goals, 9 assists

DOB: 21st September 1991
Time At Club: July 2015 - January 2017
Nationality: Brazilian
Current Football Club: Júbilo Iwata (July 2019-present) - J2 League

Like several other notable foreign players, Lukian's first experience playing abroad was with Bucheon, who he joined in July 2015 after spending several years in the lower leagues of Brazilian football. In his first half a season Lukian scored four goals and assisted four times in 22 matches, an adequate but not impressive amount. Things would change in 2016, as Lukian would go on to score 15 goals, the highest amount that a Bucheon player has scored in a single season. He also created the joint fourth most assists in Bucheon's history, level with Kim Shin (currently at K4 League club Jeonju Citizen). This earned him a move to Busan IPark in 2017, however a return of just two goals in 18 league matches saw him sent on loan to FC Anyang halfway through the season. Just four more goals came, resulting in him departing Korea to move to Thai League 1 club Samut Prakan City. There Lukian rediscovered his goalscoring form, scoring a career high of 19 goals in a single season. He immediately departed for division rivals Chonburi at the end of the season and his form continued, scoring 11 goals in 14 matches, earning him a move to J1 League club Júbilo Iwata in July 2019. Iwata were relegated at the end of the 2019 season and remain in J2 league today. Lukian has scored 11 goals in 45 matches for the club, and with his contract set to expire at the end of the season this looks set to be his longest spell at a club in his entire career.

Most Appearances By A Current Player

Cho Beom-seok, Central Midfielder - 109 matches, 1 goal, 7 assists

DOB: 9th January 1990
Time At Club: January 2016 - Present
Nationality: South Korean
Current Football Club: Bucheon FC 1995 - K league 2

Towards the end of last season Cho Beom-seok managed to break into the top 10 most appearances list, sneaking one match ahead of now tenth place Kang Ji-yong (now at Gimpo Citizen in K3 League) and sitting in joint sixth place with three other players: Jin Chang-su; Ryu Won-uh; Ahn Tae-hyun. Jin (see Number Two in 'Top 5 Most Goals') and Ryu are no longer at the club, with Ryu currently at K3 League club Paju citizen on loan from Pohang Steelers. Ahn is actually still a Bucheon player but is currently doing his national service at Gimcheon Sangmu and will not return until July, meaning that Cho will almost certainly open up a gap between though two players once the season gets going. In fact, if Cho is a regular this season he could end the season as Bucheon's most capped player, as he is currently 32 matches behind Kim Ryun-do's record of 141 appearances.

This is impressive for a player whose career looked to have stalled many years ago. As a young player Cho bounced between the youth teams of several big clubs, finally making his professional debut for Incheon United in 2011. After only six appearances at the club he was signed by Mokpo City of the Korea National League in 2012, where he remained for four seasons. He impressed for Bucheon and joined them in January 2016, making 72 appearances in his first two seasons. Cho then moved on loan to Asan Mugunghwa in January 2018 for his national service, where he only played 26 times in a season and a half. Towards the end of 2019 Cho returned to Bucheon, helping to solidify the midfield and playing an important part in their run to the playoffs. He was ever-present in 2020, and after a large exodus of players this winter he is now the longest serving player to remain at Bucheon. He will also be hoping to add to his assists this season, as he has produced the Seventh most for Bucheon in their history and is only one behind sixth placed Lee Hak-min, who is currently at K3 League club Paju Citizen on loan from Suwon FC.

Most Goals By A Current Player

Cho Soo-chul, Central Midfielder - 43 matches, 7 goal, 0 assists

DOB: 30th October 1991
Time At Club: February 2017 - Present
Nationality: South Korean
Current Football Club: Bucheon FC 1995 - K league 2

Cho has never been a prolific goalscorer, but due to the very short term nature of a lot of footballers spells at Bucheon, he still sits in joint 11th on the all time goalscorers list, level with recently departed kim Young-nam. Cho has been at the club since 2017 and it appears that his tenure at the club will be anything other than short, as he has just signed a contract until the end of 2023. He has also be named as captain for the upcoming season, meaning that he is held in the highest regard by the club and is seen as a leader. Considering the nomadic nature of his early years in which he had single season spells at Seongnam and Pohang either side of two years at Incheon United, playing 52 times in those four years, having stability and respect can make it easy for him to want to stay at Bucheon. Even after his disappointing national service spell at Sangju Sangmu, where he only played four matches, upon returning to Bucheon at the end of 2019 he instantly returned to the first team. Cho looks like he is here to stay, and is a real Bucheon legend in the making.

Most Appearances By A Foreign Player

Nilson Junior, Centre-back - 102 matches, 16 goals, 4 Assists

DOB: 31st March 1989
Time At Club: March 2017 - January 2020
Nationality: Brazilian
Current Football Club: FC Anyang (January 2020-present) - K League 2

The only foreigner to reach 100 appearances for Bucheon, the club's 11th most capped player and sixth highest goalscorer is defender Nilson Junior. Now entering into his second year at FC Anyang, Nilson has been in Korea almost continuously since 2014, with the exception being a short six month spell in the first half of 2016 back in Brazil at Salgueiro. Nilson played for several clubs in Brazil and even reached Serie A level with Clube Náutico Capibaribe. He first played abroad in July 2013 for J1 League club Sagan Tosu and made the move to Korea the following year, joining then-top tier club Busan Ipark in February. While a regular in his first season, he only played a handful of games in 2015 and left the club upon their relegation at the end of the year. Just six months later he re-signed for Busan and helped guide them to the promotion playoffs. Nilson then joined Bucheon, where for three years he was one of their star defenders and a real attacking threat. His goalscoring reached its peak in 2019 as he finished the season as the club's joint top goalscorer alongside Marlon de Jesús with 10 goals each. Upon joining FC Anyang in 2020 Nilson was ever present, playing in almost every match and contributing two goals and two assists.

Top Five Highest Goals Per Game Ratio

1. Marlon de Jesús, Centre-forward - 30 matches, 11 goals, 5 assists, 0.37 GPG

DOB: 4th September 1991
Time At Club: January 2019 - January 2020
Nationality: Ecuadorian
Current Football Club: Binacional (January 2021-present) - Peruvian Liga 1

Nilson Junior's teammate in 2019, Marlon de Jesús, contrasts with Nilson as 2019 his so fsr Marlon's only ever season playing in Asia. That does not mean he is not nomadic, however, as he has played for a total of nine clubs in seven countries on four continents, largely in Latin America but also briefly in Israel and Portugal as well. The five times capped Ecuadorian international scored enough goals for Bucheon to ensure that he is currently the club's eighth top scorer, and the most efficient in its history. While Waguininho holds the best goals per game ratio in a single season, the goals per game ratio in his first season drags down his average slightly, allowing Marlon to take top spot. If the 2017 Ecuadorian league champion with Emelec had remained at Bucheon in 2020 and kept the same goals per game ratio (and played in every league match) He would have scored 10 goals, taken him more the twice ahead of real life Bucheon 2020 top scorer Lee Hyun-il, who scored four goals all season. Marlon is in Juliaca in Peru waiting to make his debut for new club Binacional, who finished 13th in the 20 team first division last season.

2. Waguininho, Right-winger - 69 matches, 23 goals, 4 assists, 0.33 GPG

See Number Four in 'Top Five Most Goals"

3. Willian Popp, Centre-forward - 30 matches, 10 goals, 2 assists, 0.33 GPG

DOB: 13th April 1994
Time At Club: January 2018 - January 2019
Nationality: Brazilian
Current Football Club: Muangthong United (January 2020-present) - Thai League 1

Bucheon's top scorer prior to Marlon, Willian Popp, has almost an identical record, but scoring one goal less pushes him down the table. Bucheon's joint ninth top scorer with Mun Ki-han first played professionally in Brazil with Joinville SC in the Serie A, and had a loan spell at Mogi Mirim, before first coming to Korea to play for Busan IPark in the K League Challenge in 2016, becoming a teammate of Nilson Junior. Popp had a fantastic season, scoring 18 goals to finish as the league's third top scorer and helping Busan to a fifth place finish. He then moved to the J2 League to sign for Avispa Fukuoka, where his form dipped dramatically and he failed to score in 21 matches. Popp returned to Korea, becoming a teammate of Nilson Junior once again, this time at Bucheon. His 10 goals made him the club's top scorer, but Bucheon could only finish eighth. The striker returned to his homeland to play for two clubs in 2019, Figueirense (Serie B) and Ceará (Serie A), but did not stay long, instead choosing to join Thai League 1 giants Muangthong United in 2020. Popp has scored four times and assisted twice in nine matches, as they currently look set to finish outside of the continental qualifying places this season.

4. Rodrigo Paraná, Centre-forward - 85 matches, 26 goals, 5 assists, 0.31 GPG

See Number One in 'Top Five Most Goals"

5. Lukian, Centre-forward - 64 matches, 19 goals, 9 assists, 0.3 GPG
