Korean Football Round-up 15th September

From the Super Match and Ki Sung-yueng's first win since rejoining FC Seoul, the race for promotion in K League 2 to Korean internationals in Europe, Korean Football Round-up from Paul Neat.

The Ki to victory

In K League 1, Ki Sung-yueng picked up his first win since rejoining FC Seoul, helping the capital club onto a 2-1 Super Match win over Suwon Samsung Bluewings. Seoul are now unbeaten in 18 K League meetings with the Bluewings and are in contention for ACL qualification.

Tangerines peel away at the top of K League 2

Meanwhile, in K League 2, Jeju United earned themselves a huge three points in something of an automatic promotion six-pointer at home to Daejeon Hana Citizen. Goals from Ahn Hyeon-beom and Joo Min-kyu sealed a 2-0 win that kept the Islanders on top of the table. Daejeon are now eight points off the pace and look resigned to the playoffs.

Not too far behind Jeju, though, are Suwon FC. On Monday night, Kim Do-kyun's side kept the pressure on the Islanders thanks to a 1-0 win over an out-of-sorts Bucheon FC 1995. Danilo's strike in the 75th minute was the difference and ensured that the gap at the top of the second tier is just two points. For Bucheon, it was a sixth defeat on the trot, the worst run in the club's history.

Goal glut for Korean internationals in Europe

While it wasn’t the greatest of starts for Son Heung-min and Tottenham Hotspur, losing 1-0 to Everton in their Premier League opener, it proved to be a very productive weekend for a whole host of other Korean internationals.

Most notably, Hwang Hee-chan who had a debut to remember for RB Leipzig, starting, scoring and providing an assist in the 3-1 DFB Pokal Cup win over Nurnberg. Hwang made the switch from the so-called “other Bundesliga”, the Austrian Bundesliga after a successful spell with Red Bull Salzburg.

Elsewhere, 2019 Golden Boy Lee Kang-in laid on two assists in Valencia’s 4-2 La Liga win over Levante. Meanwhile, in France, Suk Hyun-jun was on target for Troyes in a 2-0 win over Pau in Ligue 2. Suk scored a 37th minute penalty to get his side up and running in their second win of the new season.

Former Jeonbuk attacking midfielder Lee Jae-sung scored two for Holstein Kiel in a 7-1 DFB Pokal win over Rielasingen and Lee Seung-woo bagged two in Sint-Truiden’s Belgium Pro League season opener against Antwerp. Elsewhere in the German Cup, former Bluewing Kwon Chang-hoon got SC Freiburg up and running in the 2-1 away win over SV Waldhof.

ACL exclusions

Korean international left back Kim Jin-su recently departed Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors for the riches of the Middle East, signing for Al-Nassr. However, despite convincing the Green Warriors to sell, the Saudi outfit cannot promise him ACL. The Jeonju-born defender has not been registered for the AFC Champions League, instead Australian goalkeeper Brad Jones will take up the Asian quota spot.

Meanwhile, midfielder Jung Woo-young has been dealt a similar blow at Qatari Super League side Al-Sadd but Nam Tae-hee has been registered for Xavi's side.
