Korean Football News Round-up September 1st

Ki Sung-yueng's K League return, a 10-goal thriller, and the first Women's Community Shield to be played at Wembley Stadium. All that and more in this week's Korean Football News Round-up by Paul Neat.

'Double-Dragon Derby'

After 10 years, nine months and nine days, Ki Sung-yueng made his long-awaited FC Seoul return in the capital club's K League in FC Seoul’s 3-0 defeat to league leaders Ulsan Hyundai on Sunday in K League 1 Round 18. Ki went up against Lee Chung-yong, the other half of the ‘Double Dragon’. This, of course, refers to the last syllable "yong/yueng" in their names which can mean "dragon" in Korean. Ki returned to Korea in July but an ankle injury prevented him from making his return up until now. He started on the bench, but came on in the 70th minute. His passing accuracy was at 92%, 83% for forward passes, and 100% accuracy with passes made to the final third. He also won 60% of his duels.

The former Daejeon midfielder now has four appearances to his name since joining from MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps. After six games played over the new season, Kazan sit 10th after two wins, two draws and two defeats.

Hwang Ui-jo helps Bordeaux onto first win of new Ligue 1 season

Korean international forward Hwang Ui-jo helped Bordeaux onto a 2-0 win over Angers over the weekend, their first win of the new Ligue 1 season. The 2020/2021 campaign began last week with a 0-0 draw at home to Nantes but, on Sunday Hwang played a part in the 2-0 win over Angers SCO provided an assist for Toma Bašić in the 27th minute. The former Seongnam FC man was deployed on the right-hand side of an attacking midfield three behind the main striker and will be looking to build on his six goals and two assists for Les Girondins since making the switch from J.League last year.

One of Korea’s female stars added another winners medal to her collection on Saturday as, for the first time ever, the women’s Community Shield was contested at Wembley Stadium. The new La Liga season is due to kick off on 13th September, Valencia are at home to Levante.

Mourinho learning Korean

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho revealed in the Amazon Prime documentary, All or Nothing Spurs, that he has been learning Korean in order to communicate more efficiently with his star forward Son Heung-min. Mourinho already speaks several languages but said that “it’s respectful to the culture of the club to speak the language of the individuals in it. With the players, I jump into their language - that is why I am learning Korean.” Tottenham's final pre-season friendly is away to Watford this Saturday before taking on Everton on 13th September.

Pohang's Kim Kwang-seok 400 Matches

Pohang Steelers' veteran defender Kim Kwang-seok made his 400th K League appearance during the 2-1 comeback win over Seongnam last weekend. Aside from a stint with Gwangju Sangmu as part of his mandatory military service during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, the vast majority of Kim's K League appearances have come in a Pohang shirt. His debut came in 2003 and since then has gone on to win two K League titles, a League Cup and three FA Cups as well as one ACL title.
