Match of the Round
Leaders Suwon Bluewings face winless Chungbuk Cheongju
Round 6 of the K League 2 season sees leaders Suwon Samsung Bluewings take on Chungbuk Cheongju, who are still searching for their first win of the campaign.
Suwon, the home side, have made a perfect start with five consecutive victories, including an opening-day win over Seoul E-Land. They have combined attacking efficiency with defensive solidity, scoring nine goals and conceding just once in five matches.
Their attacking threat has been shared across the squad. Reis led the line early in the season, while Bruno Silva has recently taken over goalscoring duties. New signing Fessin added to their options by netting on his debut against Yongin FC in Round 5. At the back, Ko Jong-hyun has stepped in effectively in the absence of Hong Jeong-ho, helping maintain the team’s balance.
Chungbuk Cheongju, meanwhile, remain without a win but have shown signs of promise. Their compact shape and organised approach have allowed them to stay competitive, while their high pressing has troubled opponents. Despite a 2-1 defeat to Busan IPark in Round 5, they registered 18 shots and applied sustained pressure. Mender García has been a consistent presence in attack, and Irakli Bughridze opened his account in that match. Improving their finishing could be key to securing a first victory.
Suwon hold the historical edge in this fixture with three wins and three draws, though meetings between the sides have typically been closely contested. With Chungbuk Cheongju highly motivated to claim their first win, another tight encounter is expected.
The match will be played at Suwon World Cup Stadium on Sunday at 14:00 local time.
Team of the Round
A momentum-regaining Seoul E-Land
Seoul E-Land are beginning to rediscover their form as promotion contenders, following a 3-1 away win over Daegu in Round 5.
They were without key attacking player Euller, who missed the match due to a hamstring injury sustained in Round 4, but his absence allowed other players to step up. Kang Hyeon-je made an immediate impact in his first appearance of the season, registering a goal and an assist. His movement, particularly in the half-spaces between the right flank and central areas, proved effective.
There were also encouraging signs defensively. Academy product Son Hyeok-chan made his first appearance of the season and dealt well with Daegu’s main attacking threat, Matheus Serafim, particularly in wide areas. In midfield, Baek Ji-woong and Park Chang-hwan provided stability, while the centre-back pairing of Park Jae-hwan and Kim Oh-kyu continues to develop cohesion.
Seoul E-Land face a stern test this weekend against Suwon FC, who are themselves on a four-match winning run. Suwon FC secured a 2-1 victory over Paju Frontier in Round 5 thanks to two penalties from Willyan Barbosa. With Ha Jeong-woo leading the attack, support from players such as Frizzo and Willyan, and a defence organised by Derlan, they appear well-balanced across the pitch.
The match takes place at Mokdong Stadium on Saturday at 14:00 local time.
Player of the Round
Busan’s impact substitute Baek Ga-on
Busan IPark extended their winning streak to four matches with a 2-1 victory away to Chungbuk Cheongju in Round 5, moving up to second in the table.
A key factor in their recent success has been substitute Baek Ga-on, who continues to deliver in crucial moments. After recording three goals and three assists in his debut season last year, he has taken his performances to another level this term.
In Round 3 against Seoul E-Land, Baek scored a stoppage-time winner shortly after coming off the bench. He followed that with a late goal in Round 4 against Daegu, and repeated the feat in Round 5, netting the decisive goal in the 84th minute against Chungbuk Cheongju.
Despite being used as a substitute in all three matches, he has made a significant impact, demonstrating composure and sharpness in front of goal. In the latest match, all three of his shots were on target, underlining his efficiency.
Busan will look to make it five consecutive wins when they travel to face Gyeongnam on Saturday at 16:30 in the Nakdong River Derby. Gyeongnam are unbeaten in their last three matches.
