2026 K League 1 Round 8 Preview

Last week's K League 1 action has set up a compelling mix of momentum and pressure across the table heading into Round 8 this weekend. Leaders FC Seoul look to extend their unbeaten run and tighten their grip at the top, while sides like Daejeon Hana Citizen and Jeju SK are aiming to shift their trajectory in very different ways. With form, confidence, and early-season narratives all beginning to take shape, this weekend’s fixtures could prove an important marker in the race for position.

Match of the Round

FC Seoul’s red-hot form meets Daejeon’s search for a response

FC Seoul have been nothing short of dominant this season. The hosts are unbeaten with six wins and one draw, scoring 16 goals and conceding just four in seven matches to showcase near-perfect balance at both ends of the pitch. Their momentum hit another high in midweek with a resounding 4-1 win over Ulsan HD in a rearranged Round 2 fixture.

At the heart of that performance was Song Min-kyu. He assisted Leonardo Ruiz's opener in the third minute before adding two goals of his own, scoring in the 30th minute of the first half and again early in the second. Excluding an own goal, Song was involved in every Seoul goal on the night. The attacking depth is another major strength, with Klimala (4 goals), Song (3), and Cho Young-wook, Lee Seung-mo, and Ross (2 each) all contributing. Seoul now look to extend their winning run and further solidify their place at the top.

Daejeon Hana Citizen, meanwhile, arrive in difficult form, having lost their last three matches. Striker Joo Min-kyu has yet to score this season despite registering an assist in the opening round, and aside from Seo Jin-su, no player has scored more than two goals, highlighting the need for greater attacking output. There are positives defensively, however. Goalkeeper Lee Chang-geun has been in strong form with a 76.5% save rate (third in the league), while also ranking among the top in punching (14, first) and catching (12, second). His performances, including a standout display against Incheon in Round 4, earned him a nomination for the February–March Save of the Month award.

The two sides were evenly matched last season, sharing one win, two draws, and one loss each across four meetings. Over their last ten encounters, Daejeon hold a slight edge (four wins, four draws, two losses), raising the question of whether they can halt Seoul’s momentum and claim a second win of the season. Their first meeting of the campaign takes place on Saturday, April 18th at 2 PM at Seoul World Cup Stadium.

Team of the Round 

Jeju SK building momentum after back-to-back wins

Jeju SK endured a difficult start to the season, going winless in their opening five matches (two draws, three losses) and dropping to the bottom of the table. However, consecutive wins, a 1-0 victory over Bucheon in Round 6 and a 2-0 win against Pohang in Round 7, have lifted them up to seventh.

A key factor in their turnaround has been defensive stability. Jeju kept clean sheets in both victories, with Tobias Figueiredo and Julien Célestine forming a solid partnership in central defence. Wing-backs Yoo In-soo, Kim Ryun-sung, and Kim Jae-woo have also impressed with their energy and contributions on both sides of the ball.

The win over Pohang also marked the first time they'd scored more than a single goal in a game this season, signalling growing confidence in attack. The likes of Choi Byung-wook, Cho In-jung, Shin Sang-eun, and Jang Min-kyu have begun to find their rhythm, and whether Jeju can produce another high-scoring display could prove decisive this round.

Jeju face Gimcheon Sangmu in Round 8. They struggled in this fixture last season (one draw, two losses), but will be looking to carry their current momentum forward. Kickoff is set for Saturday, April 18th at 4:30 PM at Jeju World Cup Stadium.

Player of the Round

Kim Dae-won making history with Gangwon

Gangwon FC secured their second consecutive win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Daejeon in Round 7, and Kim Dae-won was the standout performer, scoring the game's opening goal.

After completing his military service with Gimcheon last season, the tricky winger returned to Gangwon and recorded two goals and three assists in 18 appearances. He had a quiet start to this campaign, though, failing to register a goal contribution in the opening six matches, but broke through in style against Daejeon.

In doing so, Kim set a new club record for most all-time goal contributions, reaching 53 (28 goals, 25 assists) and writing his name into Gangwon history. His impact in the match extended beyond the goal, as he also led the team in shots on target (2) and key passes (2), while bringing energy and sharpness to the attack. His performance earned him Round 7 MVP honours.

If Kim can carry that momentum into this round, Gangwon will be eyeing a third straight win and a push toward the top of the table. The Bears face Jeonbuk this round, with kickoff scheduled for Saturday, April 18th at 2 PM at Gangneung High1 Arena.
