Ryan Walters is joined for the first time in a long time by Paul Neat and George Slade to discuss a range of topics as Korean football refuses to slow down despite K League 1 and the FA Cup being done and dusted. The three pick up in Austria where the Korean National team lost and won friendly matches against Mexican and Qatar, but the largest talking point came off the field with several players and staff testing positive for COVID 19. The hosts discuss whether or not these matches should have taken place, and which players should (or shouldn't) have been called in.
They then switch focus to the resumption of AFC Champions League where Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, FC Seoul, Suwon Samsung Bluewings, and Ulsan Hyundai all played over the weekend. They begin with a discussion on ACL's format and some potential changes, and then each give one takeaway from the four matches.
The third segment shifts focus to the final match day of the K League 2 season and the VAR controversy that plagued Seoul E-Land vs Jeonnam Dragons. They discuss Julian Kristoffersen's multiple disallowed goals as well as that handball non-call. They then briefly discuss Gyeongnam FC's 1-0 victory over Daejeon Hana Citizen which ensured the exact same match up just a few days later.
The final segment sees the hosts briefly preview Gyeongnam vs Daejeon's playoff match before they give way to Paul's interview with Australian midfielder Connor Chapman. The two discuss Daejeon's season thus far, expectations, and the looming playoff matches.
All that and more in this edition of the K League United Podcast.
