FA Cup Preview: Suwon FC vs Incheon United

Incheon United can take a break from their awful start to the K League 1 season as they make the short trip to face K League 2 leaders Suwon FC in the FA Cup on Wednesday evening. Lim Wan-seop stepped down as Incheon boss on Sunday, therefore the squad will be trying to impress any perspective new manager.

Last Time Out

Jeonnam Dragons 1-2 Suwon FC

Suwon FC beat Jeonnam Dragons on the road this past Sunday evening to move to the top of the K League 2 table. Free scoring Suwon have now won five of the opening seven games this 2020 season and looked solid on Sunday. The first half was a scrappy affair with eight players (four from each side) picking up bookings. But the action in front of goal was minimal.

The second half saw all three goals come in the space of just five minutes just past the hour mark. Suwon took the lead via young star Cho Yu-min, and then that lead was doubled just three minutes later. This time Brazilian Danilo Alves put his name on the score sheet. However two minutes later Jeonnam got a goal back thanks to former Jeonbuk and Ulsan forward Lee Jong-ho. Suwon however were able to regroup and hold on for the three points, and moved to the top of the league.

FC Seoul 1-0 Incheon United

Incheon slipped to their seventh defeat in as many games this past weekend at the hands of local rivals FC Seoul in the Gyeongin Derby. It was a match that struggled to get going in the first half with the only moment of note being an Incheon penalty. Sadly for the visitors Lee Woo-hyeok fired a weak shot wide of the right hand post and the half ended goalless.

Seoul then won a penalty of their own on the hour mark, although replays showed it was maybe a little lucky. However Park Chu-young saw his low penalty stopped by Incheon keeper Jeong San. But the hosts regrouped quickly and finally broke the deadlock two minutes later. Sub Yun Ju-Tae reacting quickest as the ball broke in the Incheon box. Neither side created much following the goal and Seoul seemed happy to settle with the single goal victory. Incheon once again lacked options and didn't look like scoring at all during the second half.

Previous Meetings

Suwon FC and Incheon United have only ever played four times over the years and all during the 2016 season, the one and only Suwon spent in the top tier. Incheon won both of their home games 2-0 and then 1-0. Whilst the games played in Suwon ended in a 0-0 draw, before Suwon winning the second 2-0 during the summer.

Their sides have never played each other before in the Korean FA Cup. However they did play in the pre-season friendly back in April, a game that Suwon edged.

Team News

Incheon have no players missing due to suspension for this midweek cup match, neither do Suwon FC.

Lim Wan-seop stepped down as Incheon boss on Sunday and the coaching staff will take control of this game. The rumored return of previous boss Yoo Sang-chul has been delayed for the time being, and any other possible new manager is currently unknown. Therefore we could see a solid rotation of Incheon players with new staff in control.

Incheon released Nigerian Kehinde last week due to a long-term knee injury. Gordan Bunoza could return following a calf issue, but his future with the club is currently unclear. Stefan Mugosa is also doubtful due to injury. Finally forward Ji Eon-hak was stretchered off at the weekend and is also a doubt.

Adversary

Suwon FC had a mixed 2019 season finishing down in eighth despite being widely tipped for a title shot. Nigerian Chimson Egbuchunam was a rare bright spot, but sadly his eighteen goal haul made a target for cash rich Chinese sides and he left over the Winter.

The standout players for Suwon FC so far this season have been top goalscorer An Byong-Jun. The North Korean forward has been attracting interest from K League 1 and J-League sides, but both that he will be a danger of Incheon to watch out for. Also Sovakian forward Akos Szarka maybe given more of a chance to shine, another dangerous player Incheon need to watch closely.

Who To Watch

Firstly upfront; Stefan Mugosa missed the Gyeongin derby due to injury and is again doubtful for this game. So the main option upfront could be Song Si-woo, the former Sangju forward was a past fan favorite due to his super-sub performances. However since returning from military service he hasn't scored.

Moving into the midfield; Captain Kim Ho-nam has been impressive this season and creating and scoring most of Incheon's goals. However his fitness is an issue and he could be rested. Therefore former Asan Mugunghwa (military service loan) midfielder Kim Do-Hyuk could be key in the middle of the park as he didn't play on Saturday.

Finally at the back, the experienced hands of Jeong San maybe rested for this cup match and therefore backup keeper Lee Tae-Hui might be given a rare chance to shine on Wednesday. Also this maybe the last chance for a comeback for injury prone centerback Gordan Bunoza.

Prediction

Incheon have played progressively worse during the 2020 season lacking goals and making silly mistakes at the back. They have lost seven on the bounce and don't have a strong record in recent seasons in the cup. Suwon on the other hand are in strong playoff contention in the second tier and can score for fun if given the openings.

This will be a close game, with the hosts Suwon FC maybe being slight favorites despite playing in the lower league. Incheon don't normally prioritize the cup, however this season things maybe different. I see this game maybe going into extra time and maybe just maybe Incheon picking up the win and progressing to the next round.

Predicted Score: Suwon FC 1-2 Incheon United
