Transfer Rumour: Alexander Baumjohann in Talks With Several K League Clubs

Alexander Baumjohann from Bundesliga to Brazil to K League
According to sources close to the player himself, the rumours that former Bundesliga star Alexander Baumjohann is keen to join a K League club this summer are well-founded and his representatives are believed to be in talks with several K League clubs.

Former Bayern Munich, Shalke 04, and Hertha Berlin attacking midfielder Alexander Baumjohann is said to be in talks with a number of K League clubs and, after his contract with Brazilian Serie A outfit Esporte Clube Vitória expired at the beginning of June, is hoping to have a deal signed and sealed as soon as possible.

The transfer window is due to open next week and interest in Baumjohann is said to be high. However, the 31-year-old is also the subject of interest in other markets and could be tempted away from the K League if a deal cannot be concluded swiftly.

In fact, Baumjohann looked set to join an unnamed K League club in January with a deal verbally in place but the player became frustrated with the club's indecisiveness after several weeks of talks had taken place.

In the end, Baumjohann sealed a move to Vitória instead, only for the K League club to then reveal they wanted him to sign after all.

The interest in joining the K League stems from Baumjohann's close friendship with former Suwon Bluewings and Jeonbuk Hyundai Brazilian striker Edu when the pair were teammates at Bundesliga club Schalke 04. Edu had tried to persuade Baumjohann to move to Korea on a number of occasions and so a move to Korea has been an ambition of his ever since.

"Edu told me only good things about Korea; beautiful stadiums, fanatic supporters, perfect organisation, great cities and also that Korean people are really nice and very welcoming."

Baumjohann’s interest was piqued further by Korea’s spirited performance and impressive victory against his native Germany in the last group match of the World Cup.

During Korea's 2-0 win, which saw former Bayer Leverkusen forward Son Heungmin score in the 96th minute after Kim Youngkwon had made it 1-0 three minutes earlier, Baumjohann was impressed with the K League contingent in the squad, most notably goalkeeper Cho Hyunwoo.

However, at present only a few K League 1 clubs have space in their squad for a foreign player. Ulsan Hyundai are yet to replace Miroslav Orsić and Suwon Bluewings have recently allowed Brazilian wingback Cristovam to join K League 2 side Bucheon 1995. Also, rumours that Croatian winger Ivan Kovačec's contract is set to expire with FC Seoul may propel the capital club into the race to sign the much sought after star.
