Citizen Arrest Slide With Giant Killing

Daejeon Citizen clipped the Bluewings of Suwon to notch their first win of the season on Sunday.

After a turbulent start to the campaign, Daejeon’s season finally got the kick start it was so desperately in need of thanks to an unlikely win away to K League giants Suwon Samsung Bluewings.

The game got off to a flier when Daejeon took the lead in the opening minutes thanks to an Adriano header.

Yoo Sung Ki’s dead ball from the left touchline was floated into the near post where Adriano rose the quickest to glance a header over his left shoulder over the hapless Jeong Seung Ryeong between the sticks for Suwon.

The goal sent the traveling Daejeon faithful into delirium, even more so when Adriano added his and Daejeon’s second with just 10 minutes left to play.

A through ball from fellow Brazilian Sassa played in Adriano who, with a deft touch, teased the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper to finish from close range.

But, almost immediately from the restart, Suwon pulled one back to ensure of a nervy ending to their afternoon in Gyeonggi-do.

Yeom Ki Hun netted from the penalty spot to half the deficit but Daejeon were able to hold on to claim a vital and impressive victory.

The result now means that Daejeon are just a point behind Busan I'Park and have some renewed optimism.

With their first win out of the way, attentions turn to Wednesday evening and the FA Cup.

Daejeon will be entertaining last season's K League Challenge Playoff winners, Gwangju in the fourth round.

The 2001 FA Cup winners have endured a torrid time in recent seasons having bowed out in the early rounds in the last two FA Cup campaigns.

Last season saw Daejeon embarrassingly crash out to a university team whilst the 2013 FA Cup campaign was ended abruptly by second tier Goyang.

Gwangju will prove to be a tough test for Daejeon having already soundly beaten Citizen at Purple Arena earlier in the season.

The 2-0 defeat suffered in March will be firmly in the minds of the Daejeon players and fans alike who will be looking for retribution and the start of an FA Cup run.

Last season, Seongnam found themselves struggling at the wrong end of the table but went on to win the FA Cup.

Daejeon should be looking to follow Seongnam's model which has lead them to the dizzy heights of the Asian Champions League.

Daejeon Citizen vs Gwangju FC will take place on Wedneday 29th April 2015 at Daejeon World Cup Stadium with a 7:30pm kick off.
