New Look Seoul: Seoul vs FC Anyang

Seoul have now gone two games undefeated in the 2021 K League 2. A 2-0 win over Daejeon Hana Citizen has been followed up by a stalemate against Gimcheon Sangmu on Monday evening. Seoul continues to fight the top teams this weekend, as they take on FC Anyang. A team sat two points clear at 1st place.

With Anyang looking to beat Seoul for the second time this season.  This will be the third time the two meet. They are also looking to recuperate from their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Daejeon in the round prior. Can Seoul continue their undefeated run and even get seven points out of a possible nine? Or will the Violets continue to dominate the league? Michael Redmond previews this one here.

Match Info

Game: Seoul E-Land Vs FC Anyang
Date: Saturday, 24th July 2021,
Kick off: 7pm
Venue: Leoul Park (Seoul Olympic Stadium)

In Sung, In Seoul

Seoul acquired the signing of Kim In-sung from Ulsan Hyundai on Tuesday. The 31-year-old winger has won everything that is to be won in Korea. From the K League 1 title with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in 2014. To the FA Cup with Ulsan back in 2017. Furthermore, In-sung has an ACL medal in his cabinet, winning it with the Horangi in late 2020.  In-sung has also had stints abroad, where he lifted the Russian Cup back in 2013 with CSKA Moscow.

It was quite a coup for Seoul to get his name on a contract as there were rumours of both Daejeon Hana Citizen and Busan IPark both looking to bring him into their fold. It was Chung Jung-yong though who got his man. Who will be the third Ulsan signing under his leadership. The other two signings include Lee Sang-min and Kim Su-an. With the addition of Yuki Kobayashi, his signing has certainly lifted spirit and morale amongst many a Seoul fan.

Stalemates in Seoul, Slip-Ups in Anyang

Seoul are still deeply thinking about the sad passing of coach Kim Hee-ho as they lined up to play Gimcheon on Monday. Tributes came in the form of shirts worn by the players as he walked out. Seoul once again had his shirt on the bench, showing that he is still with the team in spirit.

Respect for coach Kim Hee-ho shown before the game against Gimcheon Sangmu.

The game got underway and it took Japanese player Yuki Kobayashi only two minutes from kick-off to get himself into the book. He started the game aggressively and he was then involved in a big call in the eighth minute too. Yuki was on the verge of being sent off for a second yellow, as he grabbed hold of Myeong Joon-jae's shirt. After much thought, the referee decided to book the Gimcheon man, leaving many Gimcheon players and staff puzzled. Yuki was very lucky to remain on the pitch.

Leandro came on in the second half and created some chances for the Leopards, but it was not to be. A better performance from what saw a few weeks prior. However Seoul needs a run of wins, not draws to get back up there in the table.

Anyang welcomed Daejeon to the Purple Arena in round 21 in the 2021 K League 2. Daejeon were looking to bounce back after two straight defeats to Gimcheon and Seoul. It was the Citizens who scored first. A penalty in the 55th minute saw Park Jin-seob convert and put the away team ahead.

Anyang equalized in the 81st minute when Jeong Jun-yeon scored. It looked as if Anyang rescued a point. However, it was Daejeon who had the last laugh. In what looked like a complete accident. Park In-hyeok was crossed the ball from close range. It bounced off his head and into the net in the 88th minute.

It was Anyang's first defeat in ten outings in the K League 2. They have been in some impressive form this year and you may think that Saturday was more of a blip in their run to K League glory.

Anyang's A Plan

Fc Anyang have been the true underdogs this season. I myself was quick to talk about other teams who had a chance to be promoted this year. However, Anyang never crossed my lips. They are top on 36 points with ten wins, six draws, and five losses. Their success has been a team effort and also a distribution of the goals. Jonathan Moya has seven, Kim Kyung-jung has five, and Nilson, who is a defender by the way, is on four.

FC Anyang sit top of the 2021 KLeague 2 on 36 points after 21 rounds.

Anyang plays attacking football and have 29 goals in 21 games. They lead the way for goals scored in the league. This is taken into consideration before goal difference here in the K League. So far this season, we have seen a number of teams sit at the top of the mountain for a few weeks, only to freefall after a couple of games. It will be interesting to see if Anyang follow the same fate.

Have Seoul Turned a Corner?

At the start of the season, Seoul were scoring for fun and running away at the top of the league. However, right now they are struggling to score. They did get a win against  Daejeon and a draw against Gimcheon. Although they are still not scoring as much as they should. Hopefully, with the new signings of Kim In-sung, Lee Jae-ik, Lee Kyu-ru, and Yuki Kobayashi Seoul will pull back this season.

Some have faith in the boss, some are now starting to ask questions. The club have backed him by giving him a war chest to make these signings in the summer. We saw last year after Seoul signed Ko Jae-hyun and Jang Yun-ho in the summer, the Leopards started to win more and play better. It will be interesting to see if they can replicate that and hopefully go one better come October.

A Lonely Leoul Park...

We are still under restrictions, so no fans will be in attendance this Saturday evening. Seoul have faithful fans who watch them with pride and passion. They will hope that they can beat rivals FC Anyang this Saturday and jump higher than 8th place.

It will be a big ask though as Anyang will look to stay top of the league. A side that are completely looking to shake up the K League this year, they will try to ease past Seoul this weekend and continue on their quest for promotion. With other teams now knowing that Anyang can make mistakes and can drop points. All eyes will be on Seoul this Saturday evening.
